AI in Media: Hype vs Real Opportunity

SocialDay recently hosted an AI in Social Media: Hype vs Real Opportunity webinar – and it was clear from the start that this topic is hitting home for social media professionals. The chat was buzzing, the insights were practical, and the message was consistent: AI is already part of our everyday work, but it’s not here to take over.

The webinar dug into how AI isn’t replacing social media marketers – it’s supporting them. Think of it as the colleague who’s brilliant at analysis and admin but still needs your creativity, instinct, and understanding of people to make ideas land. The best results come when humans and AI work together.

The Tools We’re Actually Using

After the webinar, our speakers compared notes on the tools they use most. Here’s the starter list that came out of that conversation – real tools that make a real difference in day-to-day social media work:

  • Claude – A daily work assistant. Great for ideation, planning, editing, and even helping structure messy thoughts into actual strategies.

  • Perplexity – A smart research tool. Brilliant for quick summaries and sourcing insights without endless scrolling.

  • ChatGPT – Reliable for content ideas, captions, and creative prompts (and yes, we’ve had fun testing its image-generation skills too).

And here are a few other tools that are relied on every day to make content creation that bit smoother:

  • Shield – A must-have for LinkedIn analytics and performance tracking.

  • Veed.io – Perfect for quick video edits, captions, and repurposing.

  • Loom – Ideal for sharing feedback or explaining ideas without a long meeting.

  • Grammarly – Keeps copy clear and consistent when you’re racing through deadlines.

These tools don’t replace creative thinking — they free up time for it. When the admin is handled, you’ve got more space to focus on strategy, community, and content that actually connects.

What We Learned

AI can help us move faster, test more ideas, and refine campaigns, but it can’t replace YOU, or your personality or authenticity. The biggest takeaway from the session?

Authenticity still matters more than efficiency.

AI can support the how, but it’s people who bring the why. Our tone, ideas, and emotional intelligence build the trust that drives engagement, and these are things that an algorithm cannot replicate.
